Best Time to Visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
There’s something about the Andaman and Nicobar Islands that makes you slow down.
Maybe it’s the clear blue water. Maybe it’s the fact that you can spend half a day doing absolutely nothing except sitting near the beach. Or maybe it’s that feeling you get when the ferry leaves the harbour and suddenly the city, traffic and daily routine all seem very far away.
But there’s one thing worth getting right before you book your trip — when to visit Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The islands are tropical, so the weather can change your experience quite a bit. One month might give you calm seas and beautiful beach days, while another can bring heavy rain and rougher waters.
For most travellers, October to May is the best time to visit the Andaman Islands, with the most popular months usually falling between November and April.
But there’s a little more to it than that.
October to May: The Best Overall Season
If you’re visiting Andaman for the first time, this is the period I’d look at first.
The monsoon starts easing around September, and by October the weather gradually becomes more comfortable for travelling. The sea is generally calmer, the skies are brighter and outdoor activities become much easier to plan.
From November onwards, things really start feeling like a proper island holiday.
You can spend your mornings exploring beaches, take a boat ride in the afternoon and end the day watching the sunset without constantly checking the weather app.
That said, October can still see some leftover rain, so if you're particular about having dry, sunny weather, November to April is a safer window.
November to February: Pleasant Weather and Peak Travel Season
This is probably the most comfortable time to explore the islands.
Temperatures are pleasant, humidity is easier to handle and the weather is generally good for sightseeing and water activities.
It’s also the season when Andaman gets busy.
Places like Radhanagar Beach can get noticeably crowded, especially around Christmas, New Year and long weekends.
Still, there’s a reason people come during these months.
The beaches look incredible, visibility underwater can be good for diving and snorkelling, and boat journeys between islands are usually much more comfortable.
If you're planning a family holiday or a first trip to Andaman, this is a very easy season to work with.
Just book your hotels and ferries early, especially if you're travelling around December and January.
March to May: Warm, Sunny and Great for Water Activities
By March, summer starts showing up.
It gets warmer and more humid, but don't let that put you off. The sea can still be beautiful, and this period works particularly well if your idea of an Andaman holiday is mostly about beaches and water.
Scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and boat trips are popular during these months.
The afternoons can get hot, though. Personally, I'd avoid planning a packed sightseeing schedule in the middle of the day. Go out early, take a slow lunch, find some shade and then head back out later.
That's the island way anyway.
April and May can also be good months for travellers who want to avoid the heavier crowds of the winter season. Just keep an eye on temperatures and humidity.
June to September: Monsoon in Andaman
This is where things get a little unpredictable.
The monsoon brings frequent rain, cloudy skies and rougher seas. Ferry schedules and boat-based activities can sometimes be affected by weather conditions, and some water activities may not operate as planned.
It doesn't mean the islands completely shut down.
You can still enjoy the slower side of Andaman — cafés, local food, forested landscapes and quiet hotel days while listening to rain outside. And if you happen to get a sunny afternoon, the islands can look wonderfully green.
But if you're travelling all the way to Andaman mainly for beaches, scuba diving, island hopping and water sports, the monsoon isn't the season I'd choose.
There’s simply too much uncertainty.
What About October?
October is worth mentioning separately because it's something of a transition month.
The monsoon begins to retreat, and travel conditions gradually improve. Some days can be beautifully sunny, while others may still bring rain.
If you're flexible with your plans and don't mind the occasional weather interruption, October can be a good time to travel.
For a more weather-focused beach holiday, though, I'd personally give November onwards the edge.
Best Time for Scuba Diving in Andaman
Andaman is one of those places where the underwater world deserves as much attention as the beaches.
The clearest and most comfortable diving conditions are generally found during the drier months, particularly from October/November through May, although exact conditions depend on the location and weather.
Popular diving areas include Havelock and Neil Island, where you can find coral reefs, colourful fish and, depending on the site and conditions, larger marine life.
If diving is the main reason you're visiting, don't just look at the hotel price. Check the season, sea conditions and the dive centre's operating schedule before booking.
Best Time for a Honeymoon
For couples, November to February is probably the easiest period.
The weather is comfortable, sunsets are lovely and there's enough going on to keep the trip interesting without making it feel rushed.
You don't need to fill every day with activities either.
One day could be a beach morning, another could be a boat trip, and another might simply involve sitting together somewhere with a view and doing absolutely nothing.
Honestly, those slow days are often the ones you remember.
Best Time for a Budget Trip
If you're trying to keep costs under control, look beyond the peak holiday period.
December and New Year can be expensive because demand is high. Hotel prices and availability can become an issue, particularly in popular island destinations.
Travelling around the shoulder periods, such as October or the later part of the spring season, may give you more flexibility.
But don't choose a month only because the hotel is cheaper.
A slightly cheaper room isn't much of a bargain if rain changes half your plans.
So, When Should You Actually Go?
If you want the simple answer:
November to April is the sweet spot for most travellers.
November and February are especially comfortable for general sightseeing and island exploration. March and April can be warmer but are still good for beaches and water activities.
October can work well if you're flexible, while June to September is better suited to travellers who don't mind rain and a slower, less predictable holiday.
And remember, Andaman isn't just about ticking off beaches.
Give yourself some breathing room. Don't make an itinerary where every ferry, taxi and activity has to happen at exactly 10:15 in the morning. Island travel doesn't always work that way.
Leave some space for a late breakfast. Stay for the sunset. Take the long way back.
Because once you're there, you'll probably realise that's what you came for in the first place.
Quick Guide
MonthsWeatherGood For
October | Transitioning from monsoon | Flexible travellers
November–February | Pleasant and relatively dry | Sightseeing, beaches, honeymoon
March–May | Hot and humid | Beaches, diving, water activities
June–September | Rainy and unpredictable | Slow travel, fewer crowds
If you're planning your first Andaman trip, November to April is the easiest period to recommend for a well-rounded holiday.
And if you can avoid the temptation to pack every single day with activities, even better. The islands are much more enjoyable when you leave a little room for the unexpected.
